Social media, while a fairly new concept for businesses, makes perfect sense in moving forward with how we interact with customers and competitors. Social networks provide an outlet in which companies can remain in contact with their supporters, offer advice in their area of expertise and allow others to discuss products and services in an ongoing conversation.
It is natural for us, as human beings, to surround ourselves with people of a common interest or expertise. We form real world networks or groups in which to share our opinions about a common topic. With social media, we are merely migrating that same network or group to the online world.
Each social media site has a slightly different approach in what it offers; however, they all exhibit some of the same concepts.
Profiles
- each member of the network establishes their own individual profile which acts as their identity. Portraying the member’s experience, interests, education, etc., these profiles allow others to get a glimpse of who they are associating with.
Connections
- social networking sites allow members to connect with each other and share information. These connections are the sole reason for using social media. This concept is perfect for businesses to establish new business leads and stay in contact with current customers.
Content
- all of the information you share on your social profile is your content. This can come in the form of text, pictures, video or other posted links.
Activities
- the entire act of participating in a social media network falls under the category of activity. Joining, logging in, posting updates, sharing pictures and “friending” others are just some of the many activities taking place with social media.
These components are the basis of what makes a social media site “social.”
Adapting the practice of social networking to the business world is just as simple. Remain consistent with your online presence. Does your social profile match your company personality? Make connections that make sense for your business. Keep your content business-oriented and professional. Most of all, remain active. Creating a profile is great, but if you don’t keep up with it, all that hard work disappears into internet outer space.
